Urgent Need for Transitional Sites for Travellers

July 18th, 2002

By Tony Murphy

County Wicklow is in urgent need of transitional sites for travellers, Labour councillor Liam Kavanagh told a meeting of Wicklow Co. Council this week.

`The need is particularly great in some of the urban areas. We have no such sites in Wicklow town and if travellers are

camped in places like the Murrough we cannot have them moved because there is no alternative accommodation for them', he said.

Administrative Officer, Des O'Brien said that while the Council intends to pursue the provision of such sites, it is a very delicate matter. `If we put sites into rural areas, people may seek a judicial review on the matter and it makes the situation very difficult', he added.

In relation to the housing of travellers on local authority estates, Councillor Tommy Cullen said he does not want a situation where travellers from Galway, Clare and other parts of Ireland are housed in Wicklow when the local need is so great.
