An investigation is about to get underway in a West Wicklow quarry which is owned by one of Ireland's biggest companies, Cement Roadstone. The 147 acres site near Blessington was searched recently as part of the ongoing investigation into illegal dumping in the county.
The tests uncovered a quantity of household waste and as a result, Wicklow Co. Council has now decided that there was enough material found to warrant a more detailed examination of the area.

However, Roadstone Ltd. said today that the company has an excellent record
in relation to the use of quarrys and the Council will be facilitated in
every way by the firm in this investigation.
The Council's Environment Officer, Michael Nicholson said that following
many reports of illegal dumping in the county, the Roadstone site was one
of the many that was searched. He added that the decision to carry out further
investigations into the site is based purely on suspicion after the household
waste was discovered.
Meanwhile, the Council has published a list of household waste collectors who have applied to the local authority for a permit to collect such waste. These operators can legally continue to collect pending a decision on their application. The list is available on Wicklowtoday.com in our Co. Council Notices section.
