Labour T.D. Liz McManus has called for broadband telecommunication services to be provided to the North Wicklow towns of Bray and Greystones. Deputy McManus'call comes in response to a recent Government announcement on the provision of Broadband which gives low priority to provision of the service Bray and North Wicklow.
'Broadband' refers to high-capacity telecommunication lines that allow massive amounts of information to be communicated. This allows services such as video and audio to be available over the Internet and is a necessity for high technology business and new economy work practices.
"It is shocking that North Wicklow is losing out so badly at a time when we are trying to attract high-tech business", said deputy McManus. "Greystones has major plans for a new Business Park, while Bray has targeted the development of commercial and industrial business in order to meet employment needs. This Government initiative will now put us at a grave disadvantage.
"Being put at the end of the Broadband programme will clearly militate against business needs in Bray, Greystones and other towns in North Wicklow," concluded Deputy McManus", she said. "I am calling for an urgent review of this Government programme".
