Twelve Million Pound Funding for Wicklow Town

Wicklow town is to be funded to the tune of twelve million pounds by the Department of the Environment for a new port access road and town relief road. This comes as good news to the hard pressed town centre which is experiencing serious traffic congestion with the new levels of commercial and private traffic passing through its streets.
The long awaited port access route will receive just over six million pounds, which is specifically designed to cater for heavy commercial traffic travelling into and out of the port area. The newly planned relief road will receive just under six million pounds and will link up with the Balynabarney bypass on the N11. The grants fall under a new funding scheme for areas outside major industrial and residential centres. The Minister of State Joe Jacob announced that the Department of the Environment will be contacting Wicklow County Council requesting details of the two projects with a view to getting them started as quickly as possible.
Despite the good news concerning the new funding it will be a considerable time before the two routes are actually in place and the entire planning procedure has yet to be finalised. Details such as the exact route will have to be selected and the lands directly effected by the roads will have to be purchased. There will be then the inevitable planning objections that has besieged so many other similar developments around the county and country.
