Veteran Politician Dies After Long Illness
(October 12, 2000)
Joe New, one of Arklow's longest serving local politicians and a veteran member of Arklow Geraldines died recently following a long illness at age 83. Joe served for nearly 20 years as a member of Arklow Urban Council, and was a member of the Arklow Harbor Authority. He had served as chairperson for both bodies.
Known for his no nonsense approach to politics, Joe New joined Faina Fail in its early years and battled furiously for what he believed in. Known for his republican stance, he was also a staunch trade unionist.
Joe was also a founder member of the Marian Arts Society in Arklow, and a life-long pioneer. He was also heavily involved in the GAA, and was Chairperson of the Arklow Geraldines hurling section for a while. At a moving and tearful graveside farewell, Jimmy Dunne, assistant secretary of the GAA County Board, gave an oration for a man who served Arklow so well. Joe is survived by his wife Phyllis, daughters Mary and Patricia, nephews, nieces, relatives, and many friends.
