New Traffic Plan for Glen of the Downs
(October 12, 2000)
Recent extensive road works through Kilmacanogue and the Glen of the Downs have caused serious delays to motorists since they began and the situation has now become unacceptable, says local independent T.D. Mildred Fox. While the ongoing improvements to the route on the N11 are broadly welcomed, the manner in which the contractor Ascon is implementing the project is causing concern. Tailbacks for north-bound traffic have been reported as far back as the Newtownmountkennedy by-pass, and south-bound traffic is backed up as far back as the Brennanstown junction approach to Kilmacanogue.
As a direct result of the tailbacks, a growing number of drivers are now using side roads in an effort to beat the gridlock, and in the process are causing concern to local residents of the surrounding area who now believe the routes are dangerously busy. "Its like a motorway through here", said one resident.
However relief may be in sight. When contacted by Wicklowtoday.com a spokesperson from Ascon's marketing department said that something would be done about the current traffic problems. "Ascon is sympathetic to the plight of the drivers who commute through the Glen of the Downs", said the spokesperson, who said that Ascon will introduce new traffic management procedures in the near future to relieve the congestion presently causing so much concern.
