N11 Delays Unacceptable says Fox

October 28, 2000

Traffic problems associated with recent road works on the N11 between Kilmacanogue and the Glen of the Downs are just not acceptable, according to Deputy Mildred Fox. Apparently one

Jam in the Glen
incident involved a digger operating in the middle of the road which resulted in a delay of two hours for commuters. Others tell of similar stories especially at peak traffic rush hours.

In light of these developments Deputy Mildred Fox recently asked Wicklow County Council to liase with the contractors to ensure that the delays were kept to a minimum. She also suggested that they should ask the contractors, Ascon , to carry out some of their work at off-peak times such as weekends and evenings.

The situation is being worsened by additional road works taking place on the Greystones to Bray road and the lack of adequate public transport. The lack of progress with the Dart service to and from Greystones was singled out as a major main. "The situation cannot continue as it is. The contractors cannot be allowed to cause such delays on a major Euro-route like the N11", said Deputy Fox.

Pat Grennan, site project manager with Ascon, said that he was somewhat surprised at recent reports over the Glen of the Downs project. Grennan said that Ascon are doing what they can to manage the traffic disturbances. "We always adhere to any traffic management guidelines to be applied as stipulated by the consultants for each individual project. However this particular project is somewhat difficult because of the close proximity of the road works and the existing N11 itself." He advised commuters to avoid the area if at all possible, as this was only the beginning of even heavier construction on the route.
