October 28, 2000
There were over 2,200 accidents on Wicklow roads in 1998, according to statistics from the National Roads Authority just released. Deaths on Wicklow's roads have steadily increased from 8 in 1994 to 13 in 1996 and 20 in 1998, with over 360

people injured. Causes of this carnage include weather conditions and poor road standards, but the major contributory factor is speed.
The National Roads Authority (www.nra.ie ) records all relevant related road accident statistics for the years 1994 to 1998 inclusive, taken from figures compiled by the Garda, who are at the scene of all serious accidents. The data shows that four people died on the roads of Arklow between 1990 and 1998 and 63 were injured while only one road death was recorded for Wicklow town, but with 71 injured. Five people lost their lives on Bray's roads during the same period and there were 254 injuries.
In 1998 there were 44,000 motor vehicles registered in county Wicklow.
Another very interesting if somewhat disturbing statistic in County Wicklow's case is in relation to where the actual fatalities occurred. The year 1997 saw a total of 13 fatalities for County Wicklow, of which 12 occurred on the N11. Even when taking into account the fact that the N11 is the primary route in Wicklow, the disproportionate quantity of deaths on this road surely raises some awkward questions.
The recent national advertising campaign by the National Safety Council depicting death and carnage on our roads leaves no doubt as to how big an issue this subject has become nation-wide. The images depicted on our television screens leave little to the imagination and impact directly in their no nonsense depictions of blood and broken bodies. Not shown is the pain and grief experienced by those who have lost loved ones. However the carnage continues unabated.
