Dart Dispute to Cause More Distress for Commuters
18th November, 2000
Commuters in County Wicklow face further frustration and delays if a planned strike for next week goes ahead. The drivers on the Dart service, which includes the Wicklow towns of Bray and Greystones, are threatening industrial action in support of their claim for additional wage increases, which will cumulate in a series of one-day strikes starting next week unless their demands are met immediately. This is despite having been paid a lump sum of £8000 to provide a full Dart service to Greystones.
Councillor George Jones condemned the proposed industrial action and highlighted the fact that the ordinary person wanting to avail of a fundamental transport service is again the victim of industrial action. He called on the drivers unions to rethink their intended strike action and use the normal channels of communication with Management to settle the dispute.
He pointed out that it has been bad enough that drivers have refused to provide a full service to the Greystones area and are now using the extended service to the town as an excuse to obtain their overall salary increase. He called on the drivers to provide a full service immediately for the people of Greystones and the general public wishing to travel to and from the town.
