Thirty Trees to be cut down on Bray Head
(October 16, 2000)
Thirty trees are to be cut down on Bray Head after a licence to fell the trees was granted to the developer because two garda stations failed to send the necessary documents to the forestry service in time for an evaluation. The trees, located on the Bray Head between Briar Wood and the new Bray Head Golf Course, will be cut legally despite widespread public and political concern about environmental damage to the area, which was recently the subject of a planning dispute when Wicklow County Council's gave permission to Frenchpark Financial Services for an 18-hole golf club in the area.
The issue was discussed at a recent meeting of Wicklow County Council at which Deputy Liz
McManus called the planned felling "an outrage" and "official vandalism of the worst kind"

and the result of "developers greed coupled with bureaucratic bungling". Deputy McManus unsuccessfuly requested that standing orders at this week's county council meeting be suspended to discuss the protection of woodlands which she says are under threat in the area and has demanded an investigation into the proposed felling and firm action to protect any further tree felling. 'We need to know how we can ensure that we never have another situation like this,' said the deputy. "Our worst nightmare is coming true. Wicklow County Council must immediately preserve the rest of these trees otherwise they will be put to the guillotine along with the trees already due to be felled."
