Internet Café Opens in Arklow
November 26th 2000
A major social outlet for young people in Arklow came on stream this week when minister of state, Joe Jacob officially launched an Internet Youth Café in the town.
Based in the Community Education Centre on the Wexford road, the Café will not only serve as a social venue for the youth of the town but will also provide them with a means to develop friendships with people from many parts of the world through the Internet.
Minister Jacob, who secured the £17,000 from his colleague, Justice Minister John O' Donoghue to set up the network, described the facility as a very positive approach to drug prevention in the town.
Michael McCarthy and his colleagues in the Arklow Substance Awareness Forum are spearheading the project. The Education Centre is run by The County Wicklow V.E.C. whose Chief Executive Officer, Hugh O' Brien said that the V.E.C. was very pleased to support the project, describing it as an extension of what they do in the Youth Research sector.
"There is a huge level of activity in the centre and a particular interest in the Internet Café to the point where I see in future that I will hardly be able to get into the place on my visits here" added Mr O' Brien.
