Arklow Gardai Praised After Saving Girl
December 13th, 2000
Two Arklow Gardai were praised today for their brave efforts when coming to the rescue of a distressed girl in storm conditions at the south pier late on Tuesday night. Garda Michael Murphy and Garda Peter Caissons were called out to investigate a report of a young girl who appeared to be in distress on the top of Arklow's south quay. Conditions at the time were described as storm force with large waves smashing in the pier and throwing a spray of water covering about one third of the length of the top of the south quay.

the pier down onto the lower walkway. The girl was at one point hit by another large incoming wave and was nearly washed off the quay into the sea but for the brave efforts of both Gardai who managed to come to her rescue just in the nick of time. The girl was then taken to hospital suffering from hypothermia. Garda Murphy has just recently returned to active patrol duty having been confined to desk duty following unfounded allegations by convicted murderess Katherine Nevin.
